RADIOGRAPHY AND RADIATION PROTECTION: CRYSTAL CLEAR RADIOLOGY – CLEAN CUT ANATOMY, CLARITY OF REGULATIONS AND FLAWLESS REPORTING

This new lecture for 2020 aims to take radiology back to the fundamentals – an amazing adjunct to enhance your diagnosis, treatment planning and practice of dentistry. Over the years dentistry has become hyper-regulated and by demystifying the rules and regulations into easy to ‘take home’ messages delegates will be able to apply this to daily practice. This interactive lecture will refresh your diagnostic reporting skills for plain film imaging and introduces new reporting skills with modern imaging techniques. The lecture will also present some of the legal cases from archives and discuss what can be learnt.

Simon C Harvey, MA (Law), DDMFR RCR

Biography

Simon is a Consultant in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology at Guy’s Hospital, London and Queen Victoria Hospital, Sussex. His subspecialty clinical interests are dentoalveolar cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and salivary gland interventional radiology. A passionate educator, Simon is an Honorary Lecturer at King’s College London, the largest dental school in Europe. He lectures regularly to dental professionals and designed and runs the British Dental Association CBCT reporting Masterclass. He is published in several peer reviewed journals and has co-authored a best selling textbook on CBCT use in Endodontics, translated into 4 languages. He is an examiner at The Royal College of Surgeons and sits on the committee of the education charity ‘Teeth Relief’. He has an interest in dentolegal disputes and holds a Masters degree in Medical Law and Ethics from the King’s College London School of Law. He sits on The DDU Dental Advisory Committee and acts as an independent expert witness.

EFFECTIVE DECONTAMINATION AND DELIVERING DENTAL CARE SAFELY IN THE “NEW NORMAL”

The presence of specific micro-organisms in blood and saliva has always presented important challenges to ensuring the safe delivery of dental care.   The impact of COVID-19 has resulted unprecedented changes on all aspects of dental practice.  This lecture will provide an overview of a range of contemporary procedures required to prevent infection between patients and healthcare workers in the dental surgery.  Specific aspects of decontamination and infection prevention from HTM 01-05 will be presented.  Importantly, the use of contemporary measures required to address the problem of aerosol generating procedures (AGPs), including high volume aspiration, face masks and air cleaning systems, will be discussed.  An interactive quiz style will be will be used to provide the attendees with an assessment of the level of their knowledge.  Finally, the prescribing of antibiotics will be described to highlight the ongoing problems of antimicrobial resistance, including the impact of the restrictions of COVID-19 on this aspect of dentistry.

Mike Lewis is Professor of Oral Medicine, at Cardiff University. He has held a number of senior professional positions including President of the British Society for Oral Medicine, President of the British Society for Oral & Dental Research, Dean of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow and Dean of the School Dentistry, Cardiff University.  In addition, he served as the dental member of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Antimicrobial Resistance and Hospital Acquired Infection at the Department of Health.  He has delivered more than 500 invited lectures worldwide. Mike is the co-author of three best selling medical textbooks, namely A Handbook of Oral Medicine, A Clinical Guide to Oral Medicine and Marsh & Martin’s Oral Microbiology.

MOUTH CANCER: DO YOU HAVE 2020 VISION?

Do you have a clear understanding of the contemporary approaches to the prevention, detection and referral of mouth cancer in 2020?  Unfortunately, despite increasing public and professional awareness of mouth cancer, 65% of patients with this form of cancer are still not detected in primary care until the tumour has advanced to Stage 3 or Stage 4.  Prevention and detection of cancer at Stage 1 or Stage 2 are crucial aspects of improving the impact of mouth cancer for the UK population.  This lecture will provide an update on the potential for brief tobacco and alcohol preventative interventions in the dental surgery.  In addition, the use of recently developed primary care Mouth Cancer Toolkits will be presented.  Finally, the efficacy of the urgent suspected cancer (USC) referral to specialist services depends on correct use of this pathway in primary care?  Are you sure that you are using this pathway appropriately?  You will have an opportunity to make your decision on a series of actual referrals.

INSIGHTS INTO COMPLAINTS – WHAT’S NEW?

Have you ever been on the receiving end of a GDC complaint or a solicitor’s letter and thought – I wish I had known that this patient was unhappy – why didn’t he or she tell me?

It can be incredibly frustrating and stressful if an unhappy patient goes straight to the GDC or a solicitor.

This session will explore the recent and long anticipated “Profession Wide Complaints Handling Initiative” and provide insight into how you can make it work to your advantage.

A small number of people pursue their complaint in a way that is unreasonable. Whilst the number may be small the impact on the dental team may be considerable. Knowing how to identify and manage such complaints is invaluable.

This essential session will provide an insight into complaints and complainants. It explores why patients don’t always let the dental team know when they are unhappy. It also looks at strategies for capturing patient complaints at the earliest possible stage, and effective local resolution to minimise the risk of the patient taking their complaint to the GDC or instructing a solicitor.

Sue Boynton BDS LLM FFGDP(UK) FFFLM

Biography

Sue Boynton is a dentist with over 20 years’ experience in primary care dentistry who is recognised for assisting numerous dental professionals with a wide range of dentolegal issues over almost 20 years.

Sue works as an Independent Dentolegal Consultant, using her extensive, in-depth, knowledge and experience gained from her work over many years with a dental indemnity organisation. She continues to assist dentists and dental teams with dentolegal issues including GDC, CQC, complaints and claims.

On top of her extensive experience of complex dentolegal issues, Sue also brings her expertise to articles and e-learning initiatives. She is part of the Profession-wide complaints handling initiative working group, and a member of the steering group for the strategic review of the Dental Complaints Service.

Sue has a Master’s Degree in Medical Law, and is a Fellow of the Faculty of General Dental Practice, a Fellow of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine, and an NLP Master. She shares her knowledge and expertise on dentolegal issues in the UK and internationally and is a hugely popular speaker who is passionate about risk management and helping dental teams.

SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN AND VULNERABLE ADULTS, LESSON WE CAN LEARN FROM HIGH PROFILE CASES

The tragic death of Victoria Climbie led to many changes being made to the Children’s Act of 1989. What lessons can dental professionals learn from this case? Candidates will learn the importance of sharing information and will have a clear understanding of how this should affect our view of safeguarding children. The presentation will also give some much needed clarification on what training is needed by dental professionals at all levels.

Kevin Morgan

Biography

Kevin Morgan is a professional CPD instructor covering areas such as safeguarding vulnerable adults, child protection and the Mental Capacity Act. He delivers training programs from level 1 up to level 3 in safeguarding vulnerable adults and child protection and has delivered in-house training to over 300 dental practices in and around the UK. Kevin has been delivering regulated and bespoke CPD programs to the dental sector for over 10 years in many topics and holds teaching and instructor qualifications in all the subjects he delivers.

MEDICAL EMERGENCIES – PREVENTION AND PREPARATION FOR CHANGING PATTERNS OF RISK

Medical emergencies may occur at any time. They may occur in the surgery, in the waiting room or elsewhere around the practice with the expectation that the dental team will know what to do. Within the surgery risks are evolving as patients become older whilst remaining dentate, live with multimorbidity, and take an increasing number of medications. For all patients, allergy is a growing problem with implications for both patients and staff. This presentation will look at new and emerging aspects of medical emergencies within dentistry, and provide an up to date review on the prevention and management of common medical emergencies.

Learning objectives:

This presentation will provide an understanding of:

  • The changing pattern of hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, in a dental context
  • The symptoms, signs, prevention and management of other medical emergencies including:
    • Cardiac arrest
    • Hypoglycaemia
    • Ischaemic heart disease

Professor Mike Pemberton MBChB FDSRCS FHEA

Biography

Mike Pemberton is Consultant in Oral Medicine at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and an Honorary Clinical Professor at the University of Manchester. He completed undergraduate dental and medical degrees at the University of Sheffield and has held various junior hospital dental and medical positions as well as working in general dental practice. He moved to Manchester for higher specialist training and was appointed as Consultant in Oral Medicine in 2000. Mike currently provides clinical leadership to the University Dental Hospital of Manchester as Medical Director. He has a longstanding interest in medical aspects of dental practice and has published extensively in this area, including as a co-author of the book ‘Management of Medical Emergencies for the Dental Team’.
